Scaling Heights and Cleaning Gutters: An Interview with Michael Plancey of Clearview Window Cleaning Services
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Michael Plancey of Clearview Window Cleaning Services to discuss his entrepreneurial journey, the strategic growth of his business, and the surprisingly complex world of exterior cleaning. The conversation, hosted by David Bell, provides a fascinating look at how a young entrepreneur built a multi-service enterprise, starting from the most unlikely of times [00:07].
From Property Management to Strategic Acquisition
Michael's journey began with a bold move at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having left his property management job just before the lockdown, he decided to launch his own exterior cleaning business [03:33]. His initial vision stemmed from his frustration as a property manager: he wanted a "one-stop shop" for all exterior cleaning needs, eliminating the need to hire multiple contractors [01:28]. He started with a single van and his savings, enduring an immediate setback when his first worker quit after day two [01:47]. However, his persistence paid off, and the company grew.
The real pivot came a year and a half ago when Michael decided the best path for accelerated growth was to acquire an existing business [02:23]. This led to the purchase of Clearview Window Cleaning [02:32]. The acquisition brought a long history and a foundation of expertise, setting the stage for the company's ambitious future [05:56].
More Than Just Squeegees: A One-Stop Shop
Clearview is far more than a simple window cleaning operation; it delivers on Michael's original vision by offering comprehensive exterior services, including jet washing and gutter cleaning [06:34].
The company's window cleaning service spans the entire spectrum of difficulty:
Traditional methods and the pioneering Reach and Wash system [06:40]. Clearview was one of the first companies to bring the water-fed pole system to the UK around 1999/2000 [06:46].
For complex, high-rise buildings, they employ advanced techniques such as abseiling, cradle work, and mobile elevated working platforms (MEWPs) [07:06].
The conversation highlighted the unexpected complexity of cleaning high-rise windows, noting that when buildings lack the necessary safety certification for anchor points, the Clearview team develops custom solutions—such as the "up and over" method using weight stack boxes—to ensure the job can still be done safely and efficiently [12:09].
Furthermore, their specialised gutter cleaning service is in high demand, particularly as the weather changes. Clearview utilises a commercial vacuum known as a "gutter sucker" with carbon fibre poles, accompanied by drone or sky-cam surveys to show the client the before-and-after results [07:50]. Michael stresses the importance of regular six-monthly gutter cleaning to prevent debris buildup that can lead to costly roof leaks and property damage [09:05].
A Business Philosophy Grounded in Service
Michael's management philosophy is rooted in a desire to understand and appreciate every facet of the business. He aspires to one day become fully IRATA certified for abseiling so he can step in if ever needed [15:15]. However, he recognises that his most valuable role is now in business development, compliance, and, most importantly, client satisfaction [16:33].
His strategy for the future is to aggressively gain new contracts while ensuring his original and existing ("OG") clients—many of whom have been with Clearview for decades—continue to receive the highest level of care [18:06]. Michael’s top business tip for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple but profound: "take day by day" and never stop working on something you love, even if it means sacrificing traditional work-life balance [19:53, 20:52].
Michael Plancey's story is a compelling reminder that the backbone of a successful service business lies in a combination of innovative techniques, strategic growth, and an unwavering commitment to the people you serve.
